The history of First Hill is as rich and diverse as the neighborhood itself. From its humble beginnings as a quiet residential area to its current status as a bustling hub of activity, First Hill has undergone numerous transformations over the years. In this section, we will delve deeper into the neighborhood’s history, exploring its early development, growth and expansion, and its current state.

First Hill was originally home to the Suquamish and Duwamish Native American tribes, who used the area for hunting and fishing. In the 1860s, white settlers began moving into the area, establishing farms and orchards. By the late 1800s, the neighborhood had become a desirable location for Seattle’s wealthy elite, who built large mansions and estates on the hill’s slopes.

In the early 1900s, First Hill experienced a period of rapid growth and expansion. The introduction of streetcars and the construction of major hospitals and medical facilities helped turn the neighborhood into a center for healthcare and medical research. During this time, many of the neighborhood’s historic buildings, such as the Sorrento Hotel and St. James Cathedral, were built.

Today, First Hill is a bustling urban neighborhood that combines historic charm with modern amenities. Many of the neighborhood’s historic buildings have been renovated and repurposed into apartments, offices, and retail spaces. The neighborhood is also home to several major medical institutions, including Swedish Medical Center and Virginia Mason Medical Center. Despite its urban setting, First Hill has managed to maintain a strong sense of community, with numerous neighborhood organizations and community events bringing residents together.
